Wilma, the female side of the lifestyle sailing couple »

I opened my mouth one night to say something and as soon as it came out there were consequences. It happened when I was totally content sitting on the couch watching a beautiful sunset.  Part of my view though was blocked by other buildings. Content as I was, I would have liked to see more of the sunset and for a longer period of time. So I thought aloud that boats are good as they would allow me to move and see more. John was sitting next to me, also watching. Now I am very sure that if I would have said let’s do the dishes, he would have heard nothing. But that was not what I said. I said: “If we lived on a boat at least we could move and have a better view”. Read more>>

John, the male and experienced sailor of the lifestyle sailing couple »

The first time around it was 1975 and I’d just turned 20 when I decided to follow the call of going sailing.  With no money and having only built a sailing dinghy, I spent the next four years building a wooden 26 foot junk rigged sailing boat.  Always one to test things, I then set out across the Pacific, with a traditional rig and no motor.  Along the way I continued to work building boats and observing the variety of sailing boats others were cruising the world.  Like so many sailors, I started to think about how boats could be better designed.  Even then, I was a champion of simplicity, ease and the creature comforts; recognising that if you want to go sailing alot, it works to look after the sailor's needs first.

On a personal front, having just turned 50, I am looking forward to the next 50 years being back on the water doing what I love most; "Just mucking about in boats."

I can’t say it any better than Reese Palley does in ‘Unlikely Passages’,
“Long distance sailing is the perfect antidote for age… There simply ain’t nothin’ else worth doing.” read more
